“Thank you for expressing an interest in our Wish List. This List is produced for people who want to buy something or sponsor something at the Hospice. People often contribute for example as individuals, families or workmates perhaps in memory of someone we have cared for or just because they recognise the value of our service to the local community. Your support can be acknowledged on request in our Book of Gifts which is on display at the Hospice entrance.
You will find a range of items on the list that have all been identified as current priorities. As you may already know, The Martlets Hospice is not part of the NHS and we have to raise the bulk of our funds from the local community in various ways including the Wish List.
The Wish List is updated regularly and it is advisable to contact my colleague Gary Moyle (his contact details are given at the end of the List) to check whether any of the items have been secured or others newly identified before making your selection. Please also talk to Gary about any of the sponsorship items listed.
Thank you for your consideration and support ” Karen Taylor Director of In Patient Services

Sponsor a Patient Room
The In-Patient Unit rooms at the Hospice have been named to reflect well known localities and landmarks in our geographical catchment area. We hope that people will identify with these names perhaps because they live by a particular landmark or in a particular area and that they will want to fundraise and donate towards the upkeep of the corresponding patient room. The 12 patient room names are:
- Beacons
- North Laine
- Blatchington Mill
- St Anne's Well
- Combe
- The Goldstone
- Deans
- The Lanes
- Downs
- Wellesbourne
- Havens
- Winterbourne
We would be delighted if people wanted to fundraise or donate for specific rooms and gifts of all sizes are welcomed. We would be very happy to discuss publicity and other types of acknowledgement for large donations such as from groups and businesses.

Support a Patient
In-Patient Unit £456 per day or £3,195 per week
Day Hospice £134 per day or £535 per week
Martlets@Home £131 per day or £920 per week
Although all our services are provided free to patients, the actual costs of providing them borne by the Hospice include the cost of nursing care, food and accommodation. Many patients and their loved ones make donations to the Hospice following a period of care. People give what they can afford to give so many of these gifts do not cover the total costs shown and some people cannot afford to give at all.

Support a Counselling Session
Average £32 per person per session
The Martlets Hospice provides a range of spiritual, emotional and practical support to patients and their families which is delivered by our team of social workers, counsellors and chaplain. This free service can be delivered one-to-one or in family groups and often consists of regular counselling sessions over many weeks dealing with issues such as bereavement. It currently costs the Hospice £32 per person per session to deliver this service including staff and accommodation costs.
|
Support Nursing Costs
Average £488 per day or £3,419 per week
The Martlets Hospice employs a large and professional nursing team providing expert and compassionate care to all our patients. The nurse to patient ratio is high and nursing costs represent the largest part of our spending every year. The figures given above represent the average cost of providing a single nurse for a 24 hour day or 7 day week (as the In-Patient Unit is open continually). This amount of input would be delivered by an average of three nurses working shifts. The figures shown reflect the total gross cost to the Hospice (including all on-costs and taxes) of employing an experienced palliative care RGN nurse.

Support Occupational Therapy
Cost: £36,071 per year or £27 per session
We employ an Occupational Therapist to work with our Patients both in the Hospice and in their own homes. The service helps our patients to gain increased independence and mobility including supported and safe living at home. Provision of Occupational Therapy can be a key factor in helping patients to be discharged from the Hospice to home. Most patients will receive home visits, functional assessments and be provided with living aids and equipment. In addition, some patients receive anxiety, stress and pain relief management Occupational Therapy. Our Occupational Therapist works full-time at a total annual cost of £36,071. This equates to £27 for each patient session.
