The In Patient Unit at the Martlets is a warm, light, friendly and airy place, with 18 beds providing the highest possible level of clinical care. It's a common misconception that you will only come to a hospice for end of life care. Actually about 50% of the Martlets patients come in for treatment and then return home, where they can be cared for by the Martlets @ Home team or visit the Day Hospice.

Staying at the Hospice itself can be the first step to the improvement of a person's life after being admitted with distressing symptoms. At the Martlets, patients have access to the medication they need, coupled with a team of expert clinical staff who have the time to help patients understand what's happening and what different options are available to them. Occupational therapists and physiotherapists are on hand to assess patients needs both at the Hospice and, if needed, at home. Aromatherapists offer massage to ease pain and aid relaxation; volunteers serving tea and coffee are always around for a supportive chat. The Patient and Family Support team help ensure that emotional and psychological needs are met.

Care at the Martlets is holistic in nature; patients are treated as a whole taking into account their physical, mental  & social needs. The staff team work incredibly hard to ensure patients feel empowered and understand what is happening, what they themselves can do and what to expect in the future. Family members are always included in this process, they are closely involved too, in the decision making process. Bereavement Care is also on offer to families to help them through the many stages of grief.

One of the Martlets chief aims is to ensure the highest possible quality of life, and to maintain independence for as long as possible.
